Things have changed. I’m walking and biking through (virtual) civilization. Proceeding generally southwest from Sacramento, I’ve gone though Davis, Dixon, and Vacaville, and am now in the middle of Fairfield, California , headquarters of the Jelly Belly Candy Company . I’m going very southwest now, following the right of way of the old Sacramento Northern Railway where it’s been converted into the Fairfield Linear Park, cutting a very straight path through the city except where it was forced to jog around a gas station. Quite a change from Kansas, Idaho, and even northern California.
Pretty soon I’ll reach Vallejo, and from there Google Maps’ walking directions say to take a ferry across San Pablo Bay and south to the San Francisco ferry terminal — which kind of negates the whole purpose of the EarthWalk. I mean, real me would be walking and biking that distance, but I feel like virtual me should too. Later on, though not for a few years I think, I probably will catch a virtual ferry across a river in preference to hiking tens of kilometers upstream to a bridge and back downstream, but in this instance the distance involved in hanging a left soon after entering Vallejo and taking land- and bridge-based routes all the way to the end of this leg isn’t much different. So I will do that.
A map showing my progress is here , a spreadsheet with progress detail is here , and a Google Earth KMZ file is in this Google Drive folder . Present coordinates: 38.259°N, 122.050°W .
