B. F. Harridans at Watkins Glen State Park
Today I went to Watkins Glen (NY) to watch the Dog Days Ale, a morris dancing event staged by Syracuse’s Bassett Street Hounds. Teams present were the Hounds, B. F. Harridans (Binghamton), Charles River Rapper (Boston), Hart’s Brook Garland (Western Massachusetts), Pokingbrook Morris (Albany), Snowbelt Morris (Rochester), Thornden Morris (Syracuse), and Whistle Pig Morris (Boston).
Whistle Pig is a new team I’d never seen before, and I was impressed with the youthful energy they brought to neo-border morris.
Charles River did a remarkable rapper dance accompanied by (and stepping in time with) a solo djembe (or similar drum) playing a rhythm in (4+5)/8 time.
Two of the dancing locations were Seneca Lake Brewing Company’s Beerocracy and Grist Iron Brewing. I’d never been to either before and was especially pleased with Beerocracy, which apparently is run by an English expat; they have some nice English style ales in casks.
If you’re in the area, and reading this promptly, you can go watch more dancing tomorrow (Sunday, August 11) — they’ll be at Ithaca Commons from 11 am to 12:15 pm, and at Garrett’s Brewing Company in Trumansburg from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm.
