Six men (five dressed in white clothing and one in black, decorated with colored ribbons, with bells tied to their shins and white handkerchiefs in their hands) dance in a street in front of a large tudor revival inn. A crowd watches from the curb.

The Binghamton Morris Men

Congratulations to the numerous American morris dancing teams observing their 50th anniversaries this year. The American morris revival really exploded in 1974! I don’t remember what existing teams date back to that year so I won’t try, but well done, all!

The Binghamton Morris Men also are observing our 50th anniversary this year, but only because it took us a while to put that observance together: The team was organized founded and began practicing in 1973. A belated 50th anniversary event is better than none, though, so we’ll be celebrating on Saturday, June 15 with a series of performances in the Binghamton, New York area.

Here’s the schedule:

9:30 AM: Broome County Farmers’ Market , 840 Front Street
10:30 AM: Elizabeth Church Manor (in the outdoor courtyard, weather permitting)
3:00 PM: Recreation Park , near the band shell
4:30 PM: New Leaf Cider Company , 800 Nolan Road, Port Crane
5:15 PM: Chenango Valley State Park , beach parking lot #1

All performances are free of charge — though donations are always welcome! We invite you to hope for good weather, turn out to watch, and help us celebrate half a century of morris dancing in Binghamton.
